HatCam

I like to take video of my planes in flight, but I usually don’t have anyone with me who can operate a camera.

My solution – and certainly not an original one – is the ‘HatCam.’

All my cameras are backed with a strip of 3M Heavy Duty Fastener (i.e. Velcro). I placed a matching strip on the bill of an old ball cap.

Unfortunately, this setup filmed way too low so, to correct the angle, I built a simple mount out of a couple of pieces of thin plywood and Gorilla Glue. I added a small piece of wire that runs down in front of my face with a loop in the end, to act as a crude reticle.

I use HiDef 720p cameras but, as the plane is generally pretty small in the frame, I usually crop them down to 720×480 or 640×480 for posting on the web. Here’s a few videos shot with the HatCam:
