UMX FrankenDelta

It all started with my JAS-39 Gripon (retired). After a serious nose-in, it’s nothing more than a twisted hulk of foam that I trip over occasionally. But I noticed the wings were still in pretty good shape. What if, I … Continue reading

Time for a new cutting mat

After over three years of nearly continual use and abuse, my cutting mat is grimy, bumpy and fugly. I decided it was time for a new, clean mat, and ordered one of these 24″x36″ Alvin cutting mats from Amazon. It’s hard … Continue reading

Slowly build

After a year or so of dithering and building other projects, I’m finally ready to start on a Slowly (for my wife.) I’ll be using 1/4″ Dow blue fanfold. The wingspan (before folding the wing) is about 36.5″ / 93cm. … Continue reading

Laundry room workshop

Unnamed pusher “jet” build thread

While looking thru my hard drive, I came upon this 3D sketch I’d created a couple of years ago but never built. I decided to rectify that. The plane will be built mainly from 1/4″ blue fanfold foam. The bottom of … Continue reading

A flying … me? RCFlyGuy build thread

In the quest for something a little different, I came upon these Depron kits from Hoosier Cutout Service. You can download plans for free and cut your own, but I opted for the laser cut kit to save me all … Continue reading

“Bipie” build thread

Based on the “Bipie” plans from RCGroups, this little guy will have an 18″ wingspan and be built from a single sheet of Dollar Tree foam board. I’m hoping to use the guts from an E-flite UMX Gee Bee to … Continue reading

Computing Surface area with Photoshop

Computing the area of a plane’s wings can be complicated, involving lots of geometry and assorted arithmetic. This method requires none of those, beyond some very simple multiplication, and handles any shape, no matter how convoluted. Here’s how it works: … Continue reading
